Light flickered in the living room window of the Brolin house. It was the pale blue flash of a room with nothing on but the television. The rest of the downstairs was dim, save a light over the stove. The upstairs was dark, and Ray Trent had to wonder who the lone sole was who couldnât sleep.
He guessed it was the mom. Misty was dumb but smart enough not to lose sleep over someone as worthless as her sister. The father would have to work the next day; that was his job, right? Fathers had to go to work regardless of how many mistakes their stupid kids made. For a second, Ray hoped it was the father in the living room, so he could meet the man before this whole thing got too crazy. But he didnât think it was the man; it was going to be the mom.
Ray watched from the other side of Canyon Street. Heâd parked the minivan three houses down and done nothing but sit in the grass and watch for close to an hour. Well, not nothingâhe did have to lean behind a bush once as a neighbor drove by and then turned left on Franklin Street, but other than that, it had been a peaceful sit so far.
The voice hadnât told him to sit. It had stopped whispering for a while as if it had been tied up somewhere else, but that was okay. Ray was good where he was.
He played the game Whoâs Awake and visualized what it was going to be like once he got Misty to the cabin. He wondered what color panties he would find her in and realized it had better be one he liked since she wouldnât be able to change into any others at the cabin. Then, he retracted that thought. If he didnât like them, heâd throw them out, and she could be completely bottomless. That wouldnât be bad. He could watch her walk around with her little peach poking out and enjoy the sight. No covering up for her. The more he thought about it, the more he thought that may just be his rule once they got there, even if she was wearing something he liked.
He wondered how much trouble Mom and Dad were going to be. This time, he was taking Misty with him; there was no doubt in his mind about that. So, were Mom and Dad going to put up a fight? Sleep through it all? Maybe he could just convince them he was just there to take her on a date. He had chuckled when he thought about that. It was going to be a roll of the dice, but a game he was ready for and determined to win.
âEnough thinking,â the whisper finally said. âGo get whatâs yours.â
Ray nodded. âDamn straight itâs mine.â
He was calm as he stood. It was a strange sensation after dealing with the cop earlier. He wondered if maybe it was because the cop was a surprise.
